In ski jumping there are still big differences between women and men – and injustice. Now something is about to change for the first time on the Tour Nights tour.
The ski jumping stars around the Japanese Ryōyū Kobayashi and the Austrian Daniel Tschofenig will receive 3,000 francs (around 3,200 euros) for winning the qualification. Freitag said she received a bag with shampoo, shower gel and four towels. This disclosure made clear the financial inequality between women and men in ski jumping – and was harshly criticized. Now the German Ski Association (DSV) announced a welcome change for the upcoming event on Instagram.
The DSV wrote about a photo series with pictures of Freitag and Katharina Schmid: “Over the turn of the year, our ladies will again be taking part in the two-night tour in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf. This year a special highlight awaits: for the first time, the full qualification bonus will be awarded to the ladies.”
In doing so, the organizers responded to the criticism that came at them from many sides in view of the unequal treatment for equal performance. Sven Hannawald, angry about the non-cash prizes from Friday in January, made the suggestion on ARD: “If I had known that beforehand, I would have gone to the railway barrier in the morning with a bell bag and donated or had donations made. That was a bit unfortunate.” Hannawald also emphasized: “You almost have to see what you can get for it on Ebay. That’s bitter.”
Anger that Horst Hüttel could also understand. In an interview with t-online, the DSV sports director said about the bonuses for women: “I think that this definitely needs to be discussed when you talk about a two-night tour and a future Four Hills Tournament.” Bonuses also depend on the organizing committees of the respective World Cup locations. Because they decide which bonuses they give out.
