The ego party of Bas Smit and Sylvie Meis is over again: yesterday the third and for the time being last episode of De Geur van Succes was shown. Did they still have something to grumble about? “I can’t wear swimming trunks.”

Bas Smit and Sylvie Meis were able to smother their own egos for a number of days under the leadership of conductor Antoinnette Scheulderman. How wonderful they loved all those questions from Antoinnette about how much success they have, how rich they are and what it does to them. But they are also having a hard time. Heavy with a capital Z.

Swim trunks

People don’t see what’s happening behind the scenes, says Bas. Sometimes an Instagram story is canceled a day in advance. Or he won’t get his cola millions. But that’s not the only thing. “I’m not just sitting on the beach in swimming trunks. I’m wearing a T-shirt,” he says The Smell of Success.

Phew, what a mess. Why then? “Well, just because I’m insecure about my body and then I see a photo. I’ve stood somewhere too often with my bare torso that I thought: gosh Mina, was that necessary?”

Big belly

Bas hates it when he is spotted shirtless somewhere. “I’m exactly relaxed when they take that photo! Just not holding in that stomach. That’s a small thing, but it shows how I pay attention to it. I definitely pay attention to it, yes.”

The influencer life is not a bed of roses, he emphasizes. “You can’t turn yourself off. That’s the disadvantage of being your own brand. I can’t be Bas Smit for a day. There are times when I find that more difficult. Then my father is in the hospital and then I don’t have to do those things for a while, but it’s not possible.”

Shop closed

Ordinary people with an ordinary job don’t know what that’s like, says Bas. “You never close your shop. It’s never: lights out, we’re going home, chill. No, even on the way home I’m still Bas Smit. I can be testy in traffic, but then I have to think for a moment: hey, I shouldn’t get out for a while if that gentleman is being smart.”

He continues: “Because I am Bas Smit and there are people with their phones ready. I have to pay more attention. Being on is sometimes difficult.”

For Bas or for the outside world?
