The end of 2025 marks the 120th year since the foundation of the State Railways. The nationalization of the railways, which previously belonged to a series of private companies, was only the first of a series of revolutions that characterized the twelve decades of the FS. From 1905, when trains were hauled by mammoth steam locomotives, to today, speeds have increased, together with the comfort and safety of passengers, while travel times have decreased. The protagonists of the tracks, of course, have always been the trains: the Italian ones have often stood out for their innovation, for the versatility and practicality of their technical choices, some of which are the result of ingenuity in periods of economic difficulty, and for the typical design of the most creative minds in our history. Here are the eight who, more than anyone else, marked the first 120 years of the Fs.
