World Cup out: Darts ace advises world champion to end his career

This year’s Darts World Cup ends in a debacle for Peter Wright. A colleague was not surprised by this – and suggested that the Scot resign.
He is considered to be the most dazzling figure darts has ever seen: Peter “Snakebite” Wright. The 55-year-old from the Scottish planned town of Livingston has in the past attracted attention at tournaments not only through strong performances, but above all through his colorful outfits. What has always been particularly striking about Wright is his mohawk haircut, which he has shown off in a variety of colors during games.
On Tuesday, Wright wore his hair comb in a bright purple. But that didn’t bring him any luck. At the Darts World Cup, the two-time world champion (2020, 2022) failed in the second round against German outsider Arno Merk – 0-3. A disgrace.
At a press conference later, Michael van Gerwen was asked about Wright’s departure. The Dutchman, himself a three-time world champion and one of the biggest stars in the scene, chose clear words. “No, I’m not really surprised by his performance because he’s been playing poorly lately,” said van Gerwen. Then the 36-year-old made people sit up and take notice: “It’s time for him to end his career.”
There had been repeated taunts between Wright and van Gerwen recently. A few days ago, Wright suspected van Gerwen had poor eyesight. “I don’t know if Michael currently wears contact lenses. But I believe that MvG’s eyesight is failing,” “Snakebite” explained. But Van Gerwen doesn’t want to admit that.
“Mighty Mike” emphasized again shortly afterwards that everything was fine with his eyes. Then he fired back at Wright. “We’ve heard so many comments over the last few years. I think mentioning the name Peter Wright is a waste of time.” And further: “Come on, guys. He can’t even win a raffle these days.”
