Davis’ hero is a special guest at the Christmas party of the club where he grew up. Tonight dinner at grandma’s, suitcases and tomorrow morning departure for Australia. And Marco Pietrangeli reveals: “Today we received a letter from Federer”
Everyone wants him, everyone is looking for him and he, more or less, tries to be found. Always. Flavio Cobolli certainly couldn’t miss this evening’s Sports Festival at Tc Parioli, the Roman club where he grew up, also because the event is particularly important. In the presence of his sons Marco and Filippo, the vice-president of Parioli Roberto de Lieto announced that court number 4 of the Tennis Club will be named after Nicola Pietrangeli. “Dad would have been happy, he took his first steps as a tennis player here,” said Filippo. And Marco: “I imagine him climbing over the wall of the old Parioli to go and play football at Rondinella”. Marco also revealed a background story: after the email immediately following the death of the tennis legend, this morning the Pietrangeli family also received a letter signed by Roger Federer: “He talks about dad as an important symbol and vehicle for Italian tennis and beyond. He always remembers him with great pleasure, especially when he came and had the opportunity to meet him at the Rome Internationals”.

But let’s go back to Cobolli, the hero of Davis of Bologna. “I wanted to be here to send a final greeting to Nicola – he said – he was an important person for all of us. Then there would be many people to thank for what I am achieving. But I fought and struggled to get to where I am now. Certainly, if I am who I am today, I also owe it to the friends I met here who have never made me feel different”. And for his friends, Flavio is ready for anything. Also to transform his only and last day in Rome into a continuous transfer from one side of the city to the other, with all the Christmas traffic. After his presence at Parioli, with the awarding of prizes to the best players of the various category championships, Flavio ran to his grandmother for Christmas dinner, then home to pack his bags. We leave tomorrow morning. Destination Australia…
