The funeral took place in the church on Schoolstraat this afternoon.

The people who became unwell suffered from headaches, felt disoriented and immediately needed fresh air. The emergency services were soon called.

The twelve people with complaints were checked by ambulance personnel. Most felt better afterwards. Four people continued to have complaints. They were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The fire brigade immediately took measurements in the church, but this did not provide a definitive answer as to the cause. It is assumed that carbon monoxide was the cause of the complaints due to a defect in an installation. On the advice of the fire brigade, this installation is being investigated.

‘So sad’

A lady who was present at the farewell meeting this afternoon said that three people in a row became unwell during the service. “The latter lay on a couch for a long time and then came around again,” she says. “It was so sad.”

The deceased for whom the service was organized was her immediate neighbor. “The church was packed, but when everyone had to leave, the guests went to the nearest café. Some words were spoken there. That was nice.”
