Verkuijl’s 21-year-old girlfriend died on Thursday after being hit by a car in Ede. The motorist continued driving, but was later arrested.
The Jong Ajax players wore black mourning bands tonight and held a moment of silence before the start of the match. The tribute was followed by loud applause. Supporters of RKC Waalwijk had hung a banner with the text: ‘Strong Mark!’.
Verkuijl has been playing for Ajax since 2014, and has been playing for the reserves since the summer of 2024. He is under contract until 2028.
