The traditional sailing competition America’s Cup will be held every two years from 2027 onwards.

The organizers announced this on Monday. The next edition of the Cup, widely considered to be the oldest sporting event in the world (first held in 1851), will take place in Naples in 2027.

Until now, the exact scheduling was the responsibility of the defending champion. For example, there were almost three years between the last two editions, 2021 and 2024.

“This is a step to preserve what is special about the America’s Cup while creating a sustainable model that benefits everyone who shares our passion for this great competition,” said Grant Dalton, boss of the three-time defending champions from New Zealand: “We are securing the America’s Cup’s position at the forefront of innovation and professional sport for decades.”
