In the basement duel, Mainz and St. Pauli wore each other out and couldn’t find a winner. There was no liberation for both of them.
FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC St. Pauli are standing still in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. The clubs couldn’t find a winner in the direct duel on Sunday afternoon and played a goalless 0-0 draw. The teams wore each other out over the entire distance and chances to score were extremely rare.
By sharing points, both clubs remain deep in the table cellar. Mainz is last with eight points, St. Pauli is 16th in the table with twelve points.
The 33,000 spectators experienced a classic basement duel from the start. Both teams threw themselves into duels, wanted to have the ball and attack in order to force the break-away – at first it didn’t really work. The guests had a number of less dangerous set pieces, while Mainz’s combinations were mostly stopped by St. Pauli’s defense just outside the penalty area.
The only exception was a cross from captain Silvan Widmer, which Hamburg was unable to clear. However, Paul Nebel briefly lost his bearings in the middle and couldn’t get to the exposed ball in time (28′). For St. Pauli, Jackson Irvine (36th) made the most dangerous finish from a free kick, goalkeeper Daniel Batz made a strong save.
After the break, Mainz became a little more dangerous, headers from Dominik Kohr (48th) and Widmer (55th) went clearly over. The hosts now steadily increased the pressure on St. Pauli, but the shots remained poor. The technically demanding shot from the strong Widmer (67th) was also too high.
