The cabinet has decided to… change in law which should make hospital rental more attractive to the Council of State for advice. Minister Keijzer of Housing and Spatial Planning wants to send the bill to the House of Representatives next spring. The changes should ensure that more people rent out a room in their own home. Better use of existing buildings is – in addition to new construction – a way to tackle the housing shortage.
The bill contains no major changes compared to the version that was in consultation last summer. The law provides for a special rental contract for landlady rental of a maximum of 5 years and a shorter notice period of 1 month in the first month. In addition, it becomes easier to terminate the landlady contract in the event of sale of the home or death of the landlady. For tenants, the annual income-related higher rent increase can be canceled or reduced if it was the result of landlady rental.
Minister Keijzer: “Research shows that about a third of Dutch people have a suitable space and that about 8% are considering becoming a landlady. This potentially makes 100,000 rooms available. We want to make better use of that potential by making landlady rental more attractive. Many people have space left in their home. Landladies receive extra rental income and at the same time a housemate provides coziness and safety.”
