De Haan is looking at what alternatives are possible, and is considering, among other things, more blue zones, additional peripheral parking and also an underground parking lot. Wilfried Vandaele, Mayor De Haan: “We had a few days this summer when emergency services in the street could not get through. Then you have a problem because people are parked all over the place.”

Limits

Motorists can still park for free everywhere, a great asset, but the system is reaching its limits. “We really have to look for new parking spaces. Is that a peripheral parking lot, are those temporary parking lots in the summer, an underground parking lot. We are going to look at that now. We have provided 5.5 million euros for a parking policy and possible underground parking.”

Parking tourism

Easier parking for everyone: residents, second-home owners and tourists. De Haan also wants to put an end to parking tourism, where people park their car for free and travel by tram to another seaside resort. And an underground paid parking can only succeed if you also have to pay for parking above ground.
