A dead wolf was found along the Oranjekanaal near Hijken. The animal has been hit.
The driver called the police, a provincial spokesperson said. The dead wolf has now been collected.
It is the third dead wolf in Drenthe in eight days. For example, two dead wolves were found last week. A dead wolf was found on the Dwingelderveld on Wednesday. The cause of death of that dead animal is not yet known.
A day later, another dead wolf was found in the municipality of Westerveld. This time on the Doldersummerveld. That animal turned out to have been hit, the police reported. The police therefore assume that it was an accident.
The province of Drenthe previously announced that a shooting permit is being prepared for ‘problem wolf’ GW4890m. That male wolf is a descendant of the pack in the Drents-Friese Wold and attacked sheep near Beilen at least four times in the past period. This happened despite the sheep being behind an approved wolf-resistant fence.
BIJ12, the organization that handles wolf cases for the provinces, has confirmed in the case of the dead wolf on the Dwingelderveld that it is a female, which means that it is not the ‘problem wolf’. In the case of the dead wolf on the Doldersummerveld, it was a male. Research must reveal whether it concerns wolf GW4890m, which is labeled as a problem wolf by the province of Drenthe.
The gender of the wolf that was hit near Hijken is not yet known. Since the wolf settled in Drenthe, eight wolves, including today’s, have died due to a collision.
