With a win against Valerenga Oslo, the FC Bayern women want to get into the top four of the league phase of the Champions League and thus move into the quarter-finals.
Madrid’s missed penalty still gnawed at Giulia Gwinnwhen she was a guest on “Blickpunkt Sport” on BR television on Sunday. With a goal, their FC Bayern Munich would probably have been well on their way to defeating Atlético Madrid a week ago instead of playing 2-2, thus reaching the top four of the league phase in the Women’s Champions League and thus moving straight into the quarter-finals.
But the usually confident penalty taker Gwinn hit the penalty over the goal in the second half and now had to realize: “Of course there’s a lot of frustration when you make it 2-2 shortly before the end, miss a penalty and know that it’s going to be tight to get into the top four.”
Can FC Bayern Women avoid difficult opponents?
More precisely: The Munich team has to hope for slip-ups from the competition on their “Mission Top Four”. Two of the three teams, Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid, would have to fail for Munich to progress – who in turn have to win against Valerenga Oslo on the last matchday of the league phase. Otherwise, the Munich team will have to take the round of 16 detour on the way to the quarter-finals – and would then face a top four team instead of being seeded themselves.
“It’s a lot more at stake for us. We also want to make up for a bit from the last game,” said midfielder Linda Dallmann in the BR24Sport interview. “We have to be there from the start, give full throttle and steer the game our way.” The Munich team has been behind too often this CL season.
Victory against World class team Arsenal gives hope
Basically, Giulia Gwinn is still satisfied with the results in the new league phase: “Of course we started the Champions League season really badly (1:7 against Barcelona), but then we fought really well with the three wins.”
Just that one The 3-2 win against the world-class team WFC Arsenal at home in the Allianz Arena was particularly impressive. The Munich women can then build on this in the knockout games, in which things should go further this season than in the last four years: The last stop for the Munich women was either in the group phase or quarter-finals.
