My period sometimes skips a month. Is this normal?
Yes, it can be absolutely normal. The menstrual cycle, although we imagine it as something perfectly regular and marked, actually follows its own logic: it is much more similar to an emotional and physical barometer than a rigid calendar. It is sensitive, responsive, deeply connected to what you experience, often much more than you realize.
There are many causes
All it takes is a period of work stress, an emotional conflict within you, a few pounds lost or gained too quickly, an altered sleep rhythm, a trip that messes up your habits, a particularly intense training session or even a period of strong underlying anxiety for ovulation to decide to slow down. And when ovulation is late, menstruation is inevitably also late: it’s not the body that “makes a mistake”, it’s the body that adapts.
A cycle that “skips” a month is not, in most cases, a warning sign. It is simply the photograph of the psychophysical state of that period, an instant in which the body tells you: “I’m managing something else, let’s get back on track as soon as I can”. It’s a message of balance, not dysfunction. But when this irregularity stops being an isolated episode and begins to repeat itself, when for three consecutive months the body seems to lose its natural synchronicity, then yes, it is worth stopping and listening to it more carefully.
The body seeks balance
Because sometimes the irregular cycle is a clue, one of many, that something, beneath the surface, needs to be rebalanced. The causes can be many and not necessarily worrying: a thyroid that starts to slow down, an increase in prolactin often linked to stress or small daily habits, a polycystic ovary syndrome that manifests itself with long cycles, or a condition of chronic stress that the body registers long before the mind. The cycle, in this sense, never lies: it is one of the most sincere languages of female physiology. He doesn’t judge, he doesn’t punish, he doesn’t cause alarmism. Tells. Talk about how you are doing, what you are going through, where you are spending energy. And when it changes, it doesn’t mean that something is “broken”: it means that the body asks you to listen.
The gynecological examination
A gynecological examination, sometimes accompanied by simple blood tests, is enough to clarify the picture and restore order where there is now only a bit of natural confusion. The cycle is a continuous dialogue between body, brain and emotions. And like all important dialogues, it deserves attention, kindness and, when needed, a little extra care. Follow my course”Conscious Cycle” if you want to learn more about your body and your periods.
