AI recaps are a new trend for streaming platforms. They are intended to give viewers the opportunity to quickly access details about previous seasons or episodes. Now Amazon Prime Video has embarrassed itself with video summaries of its own successful series “Fallout”.

The streamer had to remove all clips from the program after users angrily reported many serious errors. One scene was moved to the 1950s by the artificial intelligence, although the game adaptation is known to take place in the future, more precisely in the year 2077.

The AI recaps were originally planned as an experiment to test whether they offer added value to their own users. On the surface they may provide this, but the error-proneness of artificial intelligence – also often called AI hallucination among experts, i.e. when connections are simply invented and claimed that do not even exist – becomes too obvious.

How many AI mistakes do “Fallout” fans forgive?

Amazon now feared that the viewers’ trust could suffer as a result of the faulty AI videos and therefore had to react. Apple had already made a similar move at the beginning of the year and quickly withdrew the videos when it became clear that they did not (yet) deliver the quality expected from them.

Summarizing content, whether in written form or as a video format, is one of the most frequently requested services from AI programs, so many tech and media companies will probably not do without it in the future. The further development of artificial intelligence could soon bring better results here. At least that’s what the developers hope, because only the stars currently know how quickly such improvements will be possible.

“Fallout” is based on the video game series of the same name. The series takes place 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse in the USA. Some of humanity has survived in underground bunkers. This is where the action begins when people return to the surface for the first time. Here they encounter a fragmented, brutal world with unscrupulous soldiers, cults and corrupt power apparatuses.

With its retro-futuristic look and mix of apocalyptic scenario and lurid satire, “Fallout” has earned a large audience. The second season starts next Wednesday (December 17th).
