One of the most recognizable buildings in the city is for sale on the Kanaaldijk in Helmond. The monumental villa is known to many Helmond residents as ‘the house with the clock’. According to real estate agent Perry Jacobs of Statig Wonen, the building is closely linked to the history of the city. “This house belongs to Helmond, almost everyone knows it.”
The city villa has a long history that is closely linked to the textile tradition of Helmond. The Bots textile family had the building built in 1835. In 1857 it was sold to another textile family, the Raymakers family. The house remained in their possession for another 125 years.

The national monument was built in the English architectural style. A striking landmark is the bell tower on the roof. Many authentic elements are still visible in the interior. For example, there are brick vaults under the house that have remained intact. A characteristic wooden snake’s head has been incorporated into the stair railing, a detail that is discussed during almost every viewing.
The candle factory
At the back of the garden is the so-called candle factory. A former resident once started her own candle company in this detached outbuilding. “There is a plaque with information about the history of the building,” says Perry. “That makes it a special element for people who come to visit.”
The current residents use the building as part of their family home. According to the real estate agent, it offers opportunities for people who want to combine living and working. “It is ideal for organizing workshops, holding retreats or running a practice. The zoning plan offers many possibilities here.”

There is partial underfloor heating. There are forty solar panels on the roof of the candle factory. With a living area of 629 square meters and a plot of 1,234 square meters, it is also one of the most spacious homes in the center of Helmond. The asking price is 1,775,000 euros.

According to Perry, the most striking thing about the house is the combination of space and location. “At the front you look out over the Zuid Willemsvaart. You can walk straight into the center, while you experience complete peace and quiet in the backyard. The current owners always found that combination of bustle and tranquility ideal.”
