Wael Mohya becomes the youngest player to ever play for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. His appearance against Wolfsburg marks a new record.
Wael Mohya was by far the youngest player in the club’s history to play a Bundesliga game for Borussia Mönchengladbach. At the age of 16 years, 11 months and 13 days, the offensive player was substituted on after 57 minutes in the match against VfL Wolfsburg (1:3). The previous record was held by Marko Marin, who was 18 years and 18 days old when he made his Gladbach debut in March 2007.
Gladbach’s coach Eugen Polanski praised Mohya’s performance and commitment. “I was very happy with Wael,” said Polanski. He emphasized that Mohya had worked hard for the minutes and had to wait a long time for them.
The German U17 champion Mohya is only the eleventh player to play in the Bundesliga as a 16-year-old. The youngest player in the league to date remains Youssoufa Moukoko, who made his debut for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 at the age of 16 years and one day. In the Bundesliga, the minimum age for playing is set at 16 years.
