Michelle Gisin falls during training in St. Moritz and injures her knee. The Swiss skier now needs surgery.

Swiss ski racer Michelle Gisin was seriously injured in a training fall in St. Moritz. In addition to injuries to her wrist and cervical spine, the 32-year-old was diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament in her left knee, which required an operation as soon as possible.

The accident occurred on Thursday during the second training session before the downhill races in St. Moritz. Under cloudy skies and low light, Gisin lost control of her skis in the lower third of the “Corviglia”, slipped, broke through a safety net and came to rest in front of another net.

An MRI scan on Saturday in Zurich confirmed the severity of the injuries. According to Swiss Ski, an operation is planned as soon as Gisin has recovered from the procedures on the cervical spine and right hand. Until then, she will remain in the hospital for a few more days.

Michelle Gisin’s failure is another setback for the Swiss ski team just two months before the Olympics. The Olympic champions Lara Gut-Behrami and Corinne Suter had previously had to take a break due to injuries. Gut-Behrami is out for the rest of the season after a training fall in November. Suter is expected back in January after an accident at the beginning of December.
