German biathlon is facing a personnel turning point: Felix Bitterling, biathlon sports director in the German Ski Association (DSV) for several years, will be leaving the association at the end of the current season. The DSV announced this in an official announcement on Saturday morning.
His path takes him back to the International Biathlon Union (IBU), where he takes over the management of a newly created marketing department.
Bitterling’s departure is not abrupt, but is the result of an openly coordinated process between DSV and IBU.
DSV board spokesman Andreas Schlütter praised the outgoing sports director’s achievements with clear words: “Felix has had a decisive influence on the sporting and organizational development in German biathlon in recent years with great commitment and high professionalism,” emphasized Schlütter.
Despite the regret about leaving, respect for the personal decision prevails. Particularly important: Bitterling will fully support the upcoming Olympic winter and should also set the course for the period afterwards to ensure a smooth transition.
Bitterling is still fully involved in the Olympic winter
Bitterling himself also looks back on his time at DSV with gratitude. “The time at DSV was very enriching for me both professionally and personally. I was able to work with great people and accompany many exciting developments,” he explained in the official association statement.
The focus is now clearly on the sporting highlight of the season: “First of all, my full attention is on the Olympic winter – we still have a lot to do.” The early communication of the change was important to him in order to create clarity and calm within the team.
The qualified sports manager brings extensive international experience. Even before his time at DSV, Bitterling worked for the IBU for many years, most recently as Sport & Event Director.
Now, as part of the “Target 2030” strategic plan, he is supposed to contribute to the further development of the sport of biathlon economically and medially. IBU President Olle Dahlin is convinced: “With his experience, his strategic foresight and his strong network, he is ideally suited to set up and lead the new marketing department.”
