The 19-year-old German defender is the only Rossoneri outfield player who has not yet played in the league (there are 12 minutes left in the Italian Cup). He could be loaned out in January to gain experience

After winning the U17 World Cup with the white shirt of Germany two years ago, some German media dubbed him “the future Beckenbauer”. An investiture that for now is floating in the air, awaiting feedback, and which perhaps risks being a little too heavy on the shoulders of a 19 year old boy. Especially if that boy was picked up by Milan in the summer, who paid seven million into Wolfsburg’s coffers (to which three million in bonuses must be added). David Odogu’s was a real, targeted purchase by the Devil. An investment for the future, it is clear, considering the proportion between millions spent and the age of the player. David, however, probably didn’t imagine finding himself around Christmas in the role of an unwelcome exception: he is in fact the only Milan outfield player who hasn’t played even a minute in the league. The other is Torriani, who however is the third goalkeeper and in any case is used regularly in the second team.

Odogu actually received a few calls from Oddo too. Three to be precise, but in the meantime that heavy zero remains in the box managed by Allegri. Which made him debut with the Devil in the Italian Cup, twelve minutes against Lecce in the round of 32, replacing Pavlovic with the match already closed at three to zero. But in Serie A David is still at the starting line. A situation that stands out because the squad, as is known, is small, Allegri plays with a three-man defense and there are only five central defenders. The very starting players Tomori, Gabbia and Pavlovic, plus him and De Winter. When there was a need for a change during the race, or a minimum wage in the rotations, the Belgian was called into action (with results that can be reviewed).

It is therefore logical to imagine that in January the club could consider the possibility of loaning him out for the second part of the season, in order to give him minutes in his legs and rough him up in the Italian context. In fact, Odogu has gained some experience with the German national youth selections – with the Under 17 team, in addition to the World Cup in 2023, he also won the European Championship in the same year – but he has not played in clubs: with Wolfsburg in the first team he has only made three appearances. This tells a lot, if not everything, about Allegri’s caution in throwing him into the fray when the games are hot. Odogu is still an immature profile, who needs to work on tactics and positioning, especially in Max’s defensive line, who leaves nothing to chance back there and demands perfect synchrony. If anything, a more general reflection can be made: in a squad with only 19 outfield players, it would perhaps be more appropriate for all the players to be potentially usable, and not just future prospects to be whittled away.
