With a win, BVB could have kept their dream of reaching the round of 16 alive. Now the chance is much smaller. The coach doesn’t like that.

Niko Kovač seemed visibly annoyed after BVB failed to score more than 2-2 (1-1) in the home game against Norwegian club FK Bodö/Glimt. “Definitely not enough,” said the Dortmund coach on DAZN. They “expected a lot more”.

Instead of achieving the expected mandatory victory in the Champions League, Dortmund missed a great opportunity in the race for direct qualification for the round of 16. As a result of the draw, BVB slipped to tenth place in the table – although a win would have been enough to draw level with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain on points.

“That’s not enough. If you miss the chances, then you won’t win a game against Bodö/Glimt,” said Kovač. They had the options, “but then you have to win such games 2-1. But like that – that’s not enough.”

Getting into the top eight of the league phase and thus getting a direct ticket to the round of 16 is now “certainly much more difficult,” explained Kovač. The upcoming opponents are Tottenham and Inter – “completely different caliber than Bodö/Glimt”. The coach is convinced that the season’s goal of “Top 24” and the associated playoff participation will be achieved. Nevertheless, he emphasized: “We missed a huge, huge opportunity, that has to be said very clearly.” And: “It was our own fault.”
