The FC Bayern women have suffered a bitter setback in the fight for direct entry into the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Despite their superiority in play, the Munich team couldn’t get past a 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid.
It all looked as if the FC Bayern women would make a comeback against Atletico Madrid: After falling behind early on, the Munich women were able to turn the game around with a brace from Pernille Harder. By the 88th minute it was 2-1. But then the dangerous Spaniard Fiamma Benitez (88th) scored the equalizer. This not only ended FCB’s impressive winning streak on Wednesday evening, but also ruined their chance of making it into the top four in the Champions League.
Giulia Gwinn misses a penalty
The reigning German champions missed the start of the game and fell behind from a penalty after around 13 minutes. The referee had previously interrupted the game during the ongoing game – the VAR checked a possible penalty for the Spaniards. A little later it became clear why: the ball had hit Glodi Perla Viggosdottir on the elbow. The Norwegian Vilde Boe Risa (0-1) converted the penalty that followed: She sent Ena Mahmutovic into the wrong corner and caused FCB to fall behind early, which is now almost natural.
It was only after around 25 minutes that the Munich team found their way into the game better and increasingly took control, but without becoming really dangerous. Linda Dallmann missed the best opportunity to equalize in the 32nd minute, and Jovana Damnjanović only hit the crossbar shortly before the half-time whistle.
Madrid’s equalizer in the 88th minute
However, the positive trend in terms of chances suffered a setback shortly after the restart: in the 51st minute, Giulia Gwinn was at the penalty spot because Silvia Lloris had received a cross from Klara Bühl on the arm. The VAR checked the scene, the referee pointed to the spot – but a little later Gwinn shot the ball over the crossbar. Several chances – including from Jovana Damnjanovic – remained unused before the Munich team scored the overdue goal: Harder (63′) benefited from Bühl’s great pass – from the penalty spot the Dane had better luck than Gwinn and scored the equalizer – 1-1.
Then Pernille Harder made it look like FCB would be able to turn the game around again with her next goal in the 78th. But the Spaniards responded to the 2-1 goal with a clean move: Benitez shot at goal from distance, the ball bounced off the crossbar behind the goal line – 2-2.
