In his first year at Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton experienced his career low point. There is speculation about his future. Ralf Schumacher expects a decision soon.

It began as a promising partnership between two illustrious names: record world champion Lewis Hamilton and the most successful racing team in Formula 1 history, Ferrari. But his first season in the legendary red racing car was a disaster for Lewis Hamilton.

Not once did the seven-time world champion make it onto the podium in a Grand Prix – a first in his otherwise successful career. Recently, Hamilton was even regularly thrown out in the first qualifying section, fighting with the backbenchers, while his teammate Charles Leclerc was in the top 10, sometimes even fighting for podium places.

Hamilton recently stopped trying to hide his dejection. “Nobody will be able to reach me this winter,” he said after the season finale in Abu Dhabi. He will “throw his cell phone in the trash.” He didn’t want to think about the new 2026 season yet. “I don’t think about the future. I’m just thinking about Christmas right now,” said Hamilton.

With his vague statements, the 40-year-old fueled speculation about a future. Could he even throw down and end his career? Sky expert Ralf Schumacher almost suggested he resign during the Abu Dhabi weekend. Schumacher stated that his performance was “a problem” for Ferrari: “Because with just one good car you have no chance in the world championship fight, you can’t really take that risk.” With regard to Hamilton, he said that it might even be “better if he took his hat off”.

In the Sky podcast “Backstage Pit Lane,” Schumacher followed up by saying that Hamilton had reached “the lowest point of his career.” “I’m excited to see what’s to come,” he said with a view to a possible Hamilton resignation and expects a decision to be made soon. “I had the feeling that something was coming soon. It would have to come before Christmas, I would guess. The first test in January in Barcelona isn’t that far away and it wouldn’t make any sense if it stopped.”

At least the comprehensive rule changes for the new season should give Hamilton hope. They could shift the balance of power in Formula 1 and thus bring Ferrari back to the top. However, he would also have to hope that the concept of the new car suits his driving style better than the previous one. Whether Hamilton will actually take up the challenge remains to be seen.
