The quarter-finals of the DFB Cup were drawn on Sunday evening at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. The record winners and Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern welcome their pursuers RB Leipzig. On matchday 1, the Saxons suffered a 6-0 defeat in Munich. In the league, the two top teams are currently eight points apart.
“This is an attractive draw. I think we can all look forward to the game,” said ticket fee Friedhelm Funkel, who won the cup as a player with Bayer 05 Uerdingen in 1985. Leipzig’s sports director Marcel Schäfer said: “This is of course the hardest possible draw for us and an absolute cracker in this DFB Cup quarter-final. The 6-0 defeat on matchday one will no longer play a role in our minds, we are a completely different team now. So we are approaching the game as a big task, but we are traveling to Munich with self-confidence, confidence and certainly not without a chance.”
Funkel brought the two remaining second division teams a home game each. Hertha BSC will face SC Freiburg, while Holstein Kiel will face defending champions VfB Stuttgart. The quarter-finals are completed by the encounter between Bayer Leverkusen and FC St. Pauli. The games will be played on February 3rd and 4th and on February 10th and 11th. The semi-finals are scheduled for April 21st and 22nd. The final on May 23rd traditionally takes place in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
