Steenbergen broke the more than ten-year-old European record of Katinka Hosszu from Hungary with 2.01.83.

The silver went to Ireland’s Ellen Walshe (2.04.78), while Anastasia Gorbenko from Israel took the bronze (2.05.32).

Sixth medal for Marrit Steenbergen

For Steenbergen it is her sixth medal this European Championship and the fourth gold. The 25-year-old Dutch woman took gold in the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter individual medley on Thursday. With the relay team she also won gold in the women’s 4×50 meter freestyle. She won silver with the Netherlands in the 4×50 mixed medley, and bronze in the 4×50 meter mixed freestyle.

Valerie van Roon and Milou van Wijk qualified fourth (23.74) and fifth (23.75) respectively for the final in the 50 meters free.
