A petition to preserve the mural by artist collective Toyisme on the Vechtstraat in Groningen has now been signed almost 1,400 times.

Earlier this week there were still 700 RTV North.

The signature campaign is an initiative of building owner Manette Baggen, the residents’ organization Rivierenbuurt in Groningen and the makers of the artwork.

Municipality wants mural removed
The municipality of Groningen, which itself asked Baggen to make the wall available for a work of art, wants the mural to be removed within a year. According to her, the wall belongs to a monumental building. The municipality only found out after RTV Noord reported about the project.

That got things rolling. The municipal department, which is responsible for permits, investigated and came to the conclusion that the building on the corner of Vechtstraat and Hereweg cannot simply be painted.

According to Baggen, the wall is not part of the monumental building and was attached to it in the 1960s. Like local residents, she is happy with the mural and wants it to be legalized.
