The DFB team will face debutants Curaçao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador at the World Cup. Read what else the draw in Washington revealed here.

Early presents for national coach Julian Nagelsmann in snowy Washington: As hoped, the national coach and the German national soccer team got into a feasible preliminary group at the World Cup draw in the wintry US capital. Debutant Curaçao, the smallest World Cup participant in history, African champions Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and Ecuador are not insurmountable initial hurdles at the start of the extra long road to the fifth star.

“It’s good that we are challenged. That you don’t have three easy opponents, that you also have to make an effort and push yourself to your limits,” said Nagelsmann on MagentaTV. Curaçao will be “exciting to analyze. But we won’t make the mistake of underestimating it.”

If they win the group, vice world champion France could wait in the round of 16. If Germany only comes second, record world champions Brazil would already be an opponent in the second knockout round. “Don’t take the second step before the first,” said Nagelsmann, “that deserves respect.”
