AvroTros already reported in September that they do not want to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest as long as Israel also participates. The broadcaster cites human suffering in Gaza, suppression of press freedom and interference by the Israeli government as reasons to skip the upcoming edition. Last month, the Eurovision Song Contest organization EBU announced a package of measures to accommodate the Netherlands.
The broadcaster reports in a press release that a careful process preceded this. Information was allegedly obtained from a wide range of stakeholders. “Taking everything into account, AvroTros concludes that participation under the current circumstances is not compatible with the public values that are essential to us. The decision was taken in close consultation with the NPO, which respects and supports this consideration.”
The Netherlands will not go to the Eurovision Song Contest next year
Members meeting
According to AvroTros, the EBU decided on Thursday during the general membership meeting that Israel can participate in 2026. This meeting also showed that several European broadcasters have concerns about the neutrality and apolitical nature of the Eurovision Song Contest.
AvroTros has decided not to broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest during the upcoming edition. The NPO does this so that the Eurovision Song Contest remains available to Dutch viewers and fans.
Respect
Commentator Cornald Maas says he respects the broadcaster’s decision. However, he also says: “Culture connects many people par excellence. And that is what the Eurovision Song Contest normally stands for – or should stand for. The Eurovision Song Contest has also attracted many young people in recent years and is – as it turns out – an annual international springboard for young musical talent. In that sense, I think it is quite a shame that the Netherlands will not be there in 2026, and I hope that we will be there again in 2027.”
