The 25-year-old Dutch woman significantly improved her personal record in Lublin in Poland, to 56.26 seconds. That time also marked a European record.
Caspar Corbeau swims to gold in 100 meter breaststroke at European Short Course Championships, Dutch relay silver
For Steenbergen it is her third medal this European Championship and her first individual medal. She previously won gold in the 4×50 meter freestyle with Milou van Wijk, Tessa Giele and Valerie van Roon and silver in the 4×50 meter mixed medley with Maaike de Waard, Caspar Corbeau and Sean Niewold.
The silver in the 100 meter individual medley went to the Belgian Roos Vanotterdijk in 56.80, ahead of the Israeli Anastasia Gorbenko (57.17). Giele finished fifth in 57.73.
200 meters free
An hour later, Steenbergen received her gold medal and almost immediately prepared for the 200 meters free.
Steenbergen already had the lead after 25 meters, but the British Freya Colbert in particular struggled for a while. But in the second 100 meters she made the difference: 1.50.33 meant another European record.
Caspar Corbeau
Corbeau reached the final of the 200 meter breaststroke as number 2. A day after his European title in the 100 meter breaststroke, the 24-year-old American-Dutch swimmer now had to tolerate only the Spaniard Carles Coll Marti: 2.01.91 to 2.01.93. Arno Kamminga can also swim the final on Friday. He clocked the eighth fastest time of 2.04.32 and that was just enough.
Maaike de Waard finished sixth in the semi-final of the 100 meter backstroke (57.26) and thus qualified for the final.
