Women’s Handball World Cup
Fifth win: Germany is in the quarter-finals
December 4, 2025 – 7:41 p.mReading time: 1 min.

At the World Cup in their own country, everything is going according to plan for the German women. The Montenegro hurdle has also been overcome. The reward: the quarterfinals.
Germany’s handball players reached the quarter-finals early at the home World Cup. The team of national coach Markus Gaugisch achieved their fifth victory in the fifth tournament game with a 36:18 (16:6) win against Montenegro and secured first place in the main round group II before the final duel with Spain on Saturday (from 6 p.m. on Sporteurope.TV).
Left-hander Nina Engel (six goals) and captain Antje Döll (five) were among the best German throwers in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle on Thursday evening, and goalkeeper Katharina Filter excelled with eleven, some spectacular, saves. Thanks to further successes against Iceland (32:25), Serbia (31:20) and the Faroe Islands (36:26), the DHB selection now has 8:0 points and can prepare for the quarter-finals on Tuesday in Dortmund with a lot of effort.
It is not yet clear who Germany will face. Realistic opponents are Olympic champions Norway, World Cup ninth-placed Brazil and African champions Angola. For the knockout round duel, the public broadcasters will be reporting live, while ZDF will broadcast the game (5:15 p.m.).
