Last year, employers lost around four billion euros because employees stayed at home due to a virus infection. This year that will be almost a billion less, Acture Nederland expects. “We can cautiously conclude that the extreme influence of the coronavirus on the absenteeism figures has worn off,” says director Annabelle Hagoort. “The peaks are less high and the basic level is stabilizing.”

Buffer built up

Compared to the corona peak year of 2022, there has even been a drop in absenteeism by more than 30 percent this year. This does not mean that there are no longer people who contract the flu or corona. In November, that number increased slightly again. But because these viruses were less active in the months before, the absenteeism figures for 2025 are still a lot lower.

“We are closely monitoring the situation,” said Hagoort. “But the buffer we built up earlier this year ensures that 2025 will in any case go down as a favorable year.”
