Memories of Holstein Kiel often cause pain for HSV: The “Rothosen” have been waiting for a home win since 1962. Now there is the duel in the DFB Cup.

Only fans who have long since reached retirement age remember the success of an HSV team in Hamburg against Holstein Kiel. On November 24, 1962, the Hamburg team achieved this feat for the last time in the Volksparkstadion.

In the DFB Cup round of 16 on Wednesday evening he wants to HSV put an end to this series. Before that, the Hamburg editorial team of t-online looks back at the past duels between the two northern clubs in the Volkspark.

In the 1962/63 league season, HSV and Werder Bremen fought for the championship in the north. Hamburg won 22 of 30 games – including the 3-2 at Volkspark on November 24, 1962. Uwe Seeler and Rolf Fritzsche scored in front of 14,000 spectators, Kiel only managed to catch up late.

After the season, the clubs went their separate ways: HSV played in the new Bundesliga from then on, Kiel slipped into the amateur sector for decades.

On August 3, 2018, a different era began for HSV: after relegation, the new reality was the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time. At the start, Holstein Kiel came to the sold-out Volkspark. The 57,000 fans saw a gala performance from Kiel: Coach Tim Walter’s team gave HSV a clear 3-0 defeat.

On matchday 30 of the 2019/20 season, HSV could have jumped to second place with a win against Kiel. Aaron Hunt and Joel Pohjanpalo gave Hamburg the lead, but Jae-sung Lee scored in the 90th+3. minute to the final score of 3:3. Particularly bitter: At the end of the season, HSV was only one point short of relegation.

The 3:3 on June 8, 2020 was the start of a series of draws at Volkspark when HSV and Holstein Kiel met there. On the 24th matchday of the 2020/21 season and on the 12th matchday of the 2021/22 season, both teams drew 1-1. On the 25th matchday of the 2022/23 season, the game remained goalless.
