Germany will host a European women’s football championship for the third time. UEFA announced this on Wednesday in Nyon (Switzerland).
The German Football Association (DFB) defeated applications from Poland, Sweden and Denmark. The venues should be Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt (Main), Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Wolfsburg. 16 teams take part in the tournament. There will be 31 games in total.
The DFB had been courting the 18 voting ex-members for months after the association failed in its bid for the 2027 World Cup with the world association FIFA.
Germany has hosted a European Championship in women’s football twice so far: in 1989 and 1997. The DFB team also won the title in both tournaments.
