Radiohead have had to postpone their two Copenhagen concerts because frontman Thom Yorke is suffering from a severe sore throat. Now fans in Germany are worried about the band’s planned performances in Berlin (December 8th to 12th, 2025). The crucial question is: Will Yorke be fit enough to sing for two hours on several evenings in a row?

Medical facts about vocal cord recovery

If Yorke’s disease is acute laryngitis – inflammation of the larynx and vocal cords – recovery usually takes one to two weeks, according to medical sources. With consistent rest, sufficient fluid intake and avoidance of irritants, the voice can often return to normal within a few days.

However, if the inflammation is more severe – for example with massive irritation or hoarseness – complete healing can take several weeks.

When will singing be possible again?

If there is no permanent damage and Yorke is resting his voice, the following assessment applies:

  • 0-7 days after onset: The voice is usually hoarse or completely gone, singing is not advisable.
  • 1–2 weeks: Normal speaking is often possible again, and slight humming may also occur – but singing remains risky.
  • 2-4 weeks: After consistent rest, careful singing may be possible again as long as the voice remains stable.
  • From 4 weeks: Full weight bearing is usually realistic again.

If you want to sing after severe laryngitis, you should start slowly after two to four weeks at the earliest. Ideally with vocal hygiene support and targeted training.

What this means for Radiohead’s Berlin concerts

Radiohead only announced on social media that Yorke had “an extreme sore throat,” with no specific date of illness. The corresponding post is from December 1st, so the symptoms have probably existed since November 30th at the latest.

From a medical point of view, a full recovery would not be likely until mid-December at the earliest. According to a general medical assessment, until the voice recovers (2-4 weeks), Radiohead’s adherence to the Berlin dates would not be 100% guaranteed. Accordingly, Thom Yorke would not be able to sing full concerts again until mid-December at the earliest.
