The first steps back onto the pitch have been taken: Marc-André ter Stegen is training with the team again. But his future remains unclear.
Four months after his back operation, national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has returned to FC Barcelona team training. At the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper club premises, the 33-year-old was back on the pitch with his goalkeeper colleagues Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny and completed ball exercises.
The Catalan newspaper “El Periódico”, citing club sources, wrote: “However, this does not mean that he will immediately receive medical clearance (to play).”
At the weekend, Barça took the lead in the Primera División with a 3-1 win against Deportivo Alavés. Real Madrid drew 1-1 at FC Girona. The duel with Atlético Madrid – currently fourth in the league – is scheduled for Tuesday. According to the report, it is unlikely that ter Stegen will be used as Joan Garcia is currently the new number one.
According to media reports, the financially troubled club is planning to part ways with Ter Stegen in order to save on his high salary. The future of the ex-Mönchengladbach player in the national team is also uncertain six months before the start of the World Cup. After his injury, there was renewed talk in Germany about Manuel Neuer’s possible return. Oliver Baumann from TSG Hoffenheim is currently number one in the DFB selection.
