WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – US President Donald Trump is optimistic after talks between representatives of Ukraine and his government about ways to end the war in Ukraine. On board the presidential plane Air Force One, he referred to the Ukrainians’ “difficult little problems” and cited the “unhelpful” corruption scandal in the country as an example. However, when asked by a journalist whether this would hinder the peace talks, he did not answer in the affirmative and shortly afterwards said: “I think there is a good chance that we can make a deal.”

Once again, Trump was convinced that both Russia and Ukraine wanted an end to the war. The US President confirmed that his special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with the Kremlin chief this week Vladimir Putin to meet in Moscow. However, he did not give an exact date for the meeting.

Previously, Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other US government officials met a Ukrainian delegation in the state of Florida this Sunday to discuss questions about a possible peace plan. The USA’s first 28-point plan for ending the war was recently announced, which was widely criticized as a “Russian wish list”. Europeans and Ukrainians later renegotiated the draft agreement with US representatives, but several points remained controversial./fsp/DP/zb
