After a provocative gesture against Angelo Stiller, Deventer’s Victor Edvardsen has to pay a fine. He also apologizes.

Stuttgart’s Europa League opponents Go Ahead Eagles have fined their professional Victor Edvardsen after his provocative gesture towards VfB player Angelo Stiller and apologized for the incident. “Go Ahead Eagles and Victor Edvardsen regret the incident. The club has fined Edvardsen 500 euros, which will be donated to the club’s social services,” the club from Deventer, Netherlands, said on the X platform.

The 29-year-old Edvardsen clashed with Stiller during VfB’s 4-0 win and provoked. The scene in which Edvardsen touched his nose several times caused quite a stir online. There was a pack formation on the pitch. Stiller and Edvardsen received yellow cards.

In addition to the club, the player himself also took a stand. In the published statement, Edvardsen apologized: “I would like to apologize for my behavior. Things were said and done between us that do not belong on a football field,” Edvardsen is quoted as saying. “After the game I went to the Stuttgart dressing room to apologize. I have a role model role and have to behave accordingly.”

Stuttgart’s sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth adopted a calm attitude compared to many comments on social media. The 46-year-old explained immediately after the game: “I saw it, but it was still difficult for me to judge from a distance.”

At the same time, he made it clear that such incidents should not be overestimated in the emotional context of a European Cup game: “It’s about Europa League points for Deventer as well as for us,” said Wohlgemuth and continued: “So if emotions are involved and then they die down quickly and the referee takes the right measures, then it’s not all that crazy. So, everything’s fine.”
