Nuremberg long-running favorite

Berkay Yilmaz is on the left side at 1. FC Nürnberg and is one of the top performers and long-time favorites of the second division club. In the summer of 2024, the 20-year-old was brought in on loan from SC Freiburg for two years, although return clauses were incorporated at various times. Despite the good performances, the club can count on its left-back until the end of the season, after which the youngster should have many options.
According to a “Bild” report, Freiburg has decided against Yilmaz’s early return. As in the summer, the Bundesliga club could have brought back their own team, but still wants to go into the second half of the season with the duo of Christian Günter and Jordy Makengo. Central defender Anthony Jung can also hold this position.
Through the second year on loan, Yilmaz’s SC contract is automatically extended until 2029 and it is quite possible that he will be guaranteed a good role in Freiburg. Captain Günter’s playing time continued to decline this season; the 32-year-old only started four times in the league. The bigger competition at the moment is Makengo, who only extended his contract early in July.

If there is no regular place for Yilmaz, a permanent move would become more likely. According to the report, the Turkish youth international has a firm plan to play in the Bundesliga, Serie A or LaLiga next season. There is already enough interest from clubs from other leagues; according to the report, Glasgow Rangers and the French first division club FC Toulouse have registered for the winter transfer window. The FCN could also earn money from a transfer next summer: According to transfer market information, up to 250,000 euros are possible for a certain transfer fee.
