Bruce Willis has been staying in a special home for dementia patients for several months. But he spends Christmas surrounded by his large patchwork family.
As the 70-year-old battles frontotemporal dementia (FTD), his wife Emma Heming-Willis explains how they manage to keep him involved in the festive season with dignity. “You have to learn and adapt and create new memories, keep the same traditions as before,” she said “People.” “I think it’s important that we don’t paint such a negative picture of dementia. We still laugh. There’s still joy. It just looks different.”
For Emma, their daughters Mabel and Evelyn, and Willis’ adult children Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, this means maintaining a balance between the difficult acceptance of the illness and the search for moments together.
Last month, Emma opened up about how her and Bruce’s young daughters are dealing with their father’s condition, admitting it’s hard for her to cope with him “missing important milestones”.
“But children are resilient,” she emphasized in an interview with Australian Vogue. “I used to hate hearing it because people didn’t understand what we were going through. I don’t know if my kids will ever get over it. But they’re learning, and so am I.”
Bruce Willis loves Christmas
For years, Bruce Willis has been seen in the family as the one who basically took over the holidays. Things look different now, but the rituals should remain. “Bruce loved Christmas and we love celebrating with him,” said his wife Emma. “It just all looks different, so we adjusted to that.”
The Willis-Moore family has been a well-coordinated team for decades. Bruce and Demi Moore met in 1987, married that same year and remained close after their split in 1998.
“I still love Demi. We’re very close,” Bruce added to Rolling Stone in 2000. “We have three children that we will continue to raise together, and we are probably closer today than ever before. We recognize that we have a lifelong commitment to our children. Our friendship continues.”
The patchwork family at a glance
Rumer, the eldest daughter, was born in 1988 and is now the mother of a daughter named Louetta. She recently explained that her baby’s name is a mix of her father’s favorite singers Louis Armstrong, Etta James and the Isley Brothers. Even though Rumer now lives separately from the father of her child, the musician Derek Richard Thomas, they say they stick together as a family.
“Derek is my best friend, and nothing has changed,” Rumer told People in October 2024. “We’ve found a wonderful way to maintain our friendship and our loving co-parenting. And I think we’re both very lucky to be able to do that for ourselves and for Lou.”
She always describes her parents as role models of a functioning co-parenting relationship. For her, her father’s presence is a gift. She said on Instagram: “I’m so grateful that whether he recognizes me or not, he can feel the love I give him – and I feel it from him.”
Tallulah, the youngest daughter from her marriage to Demi, has spoken openly in the past about mental health, eating disorders and the stress of watching her father fall ill. She described her diagnosis of borderline personality disorder as a turning point – also in her relationship with her father.
Tallulah announced her engagement to her boyfriend, musician Justin Acee, on Christmas Eve last year. He proposed at his future mother-in-law’s home in Idaho and arranged for a family member to capture the moment on video.
As a child, Scout appeared in some of her parents’ films, but she was more interested in photography and music. The Brown University graduate released her self-titled debut album in 2022.

Bruce Willis has been married to Emma since 2009. A late great love, as he said himself. Since his diagnosis, she has been a public advocate for brain health, founding Make Time Wellness and speaking out about the realities of FTD.
Mabel and Evelyn, 13 and 11 years old, had a lot from their father despite the difficult situation surrounding Bruce Willis’ health development. As Emma affirmed, the actor was very generous in dedicating time to them, especially in their first years of life.
