Danny da Costa had to wait more than six years for his fifth goal in the Bundesliga. On the last matchday the time had come: in the 1-1 draw against TSG Hoffenheim, Mainz was able to celebrate its own goal for the first time since October 27, 2019. “It’s obviously good. Especially when you score so rarely, it’s a nice feeling,” the central defender explained afterwards. However, there are also professionals who are completely scoreless in Germany’s top division.

Of the players currently active in the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen’s Senne Lynen is waiting the longest. The defensive midfielder has made 74 appearances and 5,573 minutes without scoring so far. Behind the Belgian are 1. FC Heidenheim’s Omar Traoré (72 games) and RB Leipzig’s Nicolas Seiwald (62). A total of six professionals have played at least 50 games without a goal.

If you look at the complete list of players who are no longer active in the Bundesliga and who have already retired, Lynen only finishes in 44th place, along with ex-Munich player Lucas Hernández. In contrast, 20 footballers have a losing streak of over 100 appearances. Dennis Diekmeier, who is no longer active, is far ahead. The former HSV and Nuremberg professional remained without a goal in 203 Bundesliga games; his waiting time only ended when he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga to SV Sandhausen. After 293 professional appearances across all competitions without a goal, the former defender finally scored against Wehen Wiesbaden (1-0) in May 2020 at the age of 30 and seven months.

But other prominent names such as Thomas Eichin, Max Eberl, Tomás Rincón and Benjamin Stambouli can also be found in this overview. In the 2nd Bundesliga, Herthan’s Diego Demme currently has to be patient the longest. The 34-year-old has not scored a goal in 154 games and 13,755 minutes. Historically, only six kickers had more games. In the Bundesliga, however, he has already celebrated a goal.
