Cross-country skiing Olympic champion Katharina Hennig has curbed expectations before the start of the World Cup season. After a long illness, she “had to adjust the goals for the first few weeks of the World Cup a little,” said the 29-year-old before the start in Kuusamo, Finland, on Friday.

After the failure of Victoria Carl, who is out for the entire winter due to her positive doping test, Hennig has the greatest hopes for the coming season. Together, Carl and Hennig surprisingly won gold in the team sprint at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

But now Hennig was slowed down for several weeks in the fall. “I will need the coming races to get back into competitive shape and am now trying to make the best of the situation – with the aim of qualifying for the Olympic Games in December and January,” said Hennig.

Albert Kuchler, Lucas Bögl and Anna-Maria Dietze will be missing from Kuusamo after suffering from flu. Lisa Lohmann is also not joining the team yet after suffering a stress fracture of her fibula at the end of September.
