The 18 islands of the smallest World Cup participant are located in the middle of the North Atlantic. There are just half as many people living on the Faroe Islands as in Trier: 54,000. The sensation of the handball boom that the small island state recently experienced is all the greater.

It’s not always the winners who throw the best party.
Weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” about the Faroe Islands fans

Last year, the handball men from the Faroe Islands represented their country at a European Handball Championship for the first time in Berlin. Since then, Fähringen’s supporters have had a reputation for being the loudest and hardest-partying fans in handball. The newspaper “Die Zeit” wrote at the time: “It’s not always the winners who throw the best party.”

This week they want to throw the next handball party in Trier. The Women’s team takes part in a World Cup for the first time in Trier. 200 “handball crazy” fans accompany the team.

Hotels benefit from the Women’s Handball World Cup

A total of eight teams will compete in two preliminary round groups of the World Cup in Trier. Including Olympic champions Norway and South Korea. The players and support staff alone are already filling two hotels. There are also officials from the handball associations.

The Handball World Cup is now good for Trier hotels
Paula Kolz, Trier Tourist Information

The booking numbers during the World Cup week were exceptionally good, says Paula Kolz from the Trier Tourist Information Office. From mid-November onwards there will be a small dip in bookings, which will only slowly be made up for by the Christmas market.

Shiny lights and gift ideas: The Trier Christmas market enchants with a variety of stands.

Things are different now. “Almost all the hotels we talk to are almost fully booked. The Handball World Cup is good for the Trier hotels in November.” A request from Faroe Islands fans to the Arena Trier shows that the World Cup can also bring additional guests to Trier restaurants.

They wanted to book the Arena Restaurant exclusively for themselves
Daniel Orth, press spokesman for Arena Trier

In the coming days there will be two games per evening until Monday. Enough time for fans to explore Trier during the day.

Even 1,600 kilometers are not too far for Faroe handball fans. Over 200 are expected at the World Cup in Trier.

The supporters of the Faroe Islands were apparently planning a central catering point for themselves. “I heard that the Faroe Islands wanted to book our arena restaurant exclusively for themselves. But we couldn’t fulfill their wish,” says Arena press spokesman Daniel Orth.
