“I don’t see”
After change: Mick Schumacher reacts to concerns

The son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher is taking the step into the IndyCar series – and sees an opportunity to return to Formula 1.
Mick Schumacher will start in the American IndyCar series in the future – but does not see this as a farewell to Formula 1. “I don’t see why the move to IndyCar should close the door,” said the 26-year-old at a digital press conference. There he emphasized that it was a good feeling to be driving a single-seater again.
The day before it had been announced that Schumacher would be racing for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team – but earlier than planned. The official announcement was actually only scheduled for Tuesday. “It’s so exciting that we were a little early,” joked Schumacher. It is still unclear how long his contract with the team will last. That still needs to be clarified.
Schumacher will make his comeback in formula racing with starting number 47 – as he did during his time in Formula 1. In 2021 and 2022 he was there for the US team Haas, but remained without a new regular cockpit. Instead, he switched to Mercedes as a reserve driver and drove for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship in 2024 and 2025.
The German is aware that his move to IndyCar involves risks, for example in oval races like the 500 Miles of Indianapolis. “The speed is crazy, but I accept the risk,” said Schumacher. Racing is generally dangerous. “I don’t see why it should be more dangerous than other (series).”
The new IndyCar season begins on March 1, 2026 in St. Petersburg (Florida). The legendary Indianapolis 500 mile race is on the calendar for May 9th.
