The alderman for animal welfare, who was previously chairman of the Blue Cross, wants Ostend to play a pioneering role in animal welfare. Fabrice Goffin, councilor for animal welfare Ostend: “This will be a center for animal welfare. Because we will do much more here than in a traditional animal shelter. Here we will guide people. Lessons will be given here, but people with questions about animal welfare or their pets can also come here for advice.”
Modern
The Blue Cross, with more than 100 volunteers, will provide services to Ostend, Oudenburg, Gistel and Bredene. They have to pay 1 euro per inhabitant annually. But it is also one of the most modern shelters in our country. Caregivers, veterinarians and behavioral therapists work there. All animals were given a new home. William Springuel, Blue Cross Center for Animal Welfare: “The cat shelters are 100 percent operational. 60 cats are now staying there. The dog kennels are 80 percent finished. We now have an occupancy of approximately 25 dogs.”
The loose-leash areas of approximately 120 square meters should also be ready within a few weeks. There will be an open day in the spring of next year.
