Dominik Kohr (Mainz 05, r.) in conversation with referee Sascha Stegemann

Dominik Kohr’s foul on Max Moerstedt was one of the biggest upsets of the 11th Bundesliga matchday. Now the defender has to take a longer break – and gets a fine.

Record offender Dominik Kohr from 1. FSV Mainz 05 has been banned for three games after his red card again. He also received a fine of 15,000 euros. This judgment was made by the sports court of the German Football Association in Frankfurt/Main, as the DFB announced.

The 31-year-old, who was sent off against FC Augsburg in September, was sent off for the ninth time in his career set a Bundesliga record in a 1-1 draw against TSG Hoffenheim on Friday: Kohr surpassed Jens Nowotny (formerly active at Bayer Leverkusen, among others) and Luiz Gustavo (at Bayern Munich, among others), who each saw red or yellow-red eight times.

According to TV, Kohr was “scared”

Kohr badly fouled Hoffenheim’s Max Moerstedt in the final phase. After viewing the video images, referee Sascha Stegemann decided to send off the player. The foul again caused significant criticism of the defensive specialist’s style of play. Moerstedt survived the Mainz player’s rough start “well, apart from a bruise,” TSG coach Christian Ilzer later reported. He hasn’t seen such a hard foul in a long time.

Kohr apologized the next day. He only saw the extent of his action on the TV pictures. “I’m scared myself. That could have turned out differently. Max, please excuse me – I’m relieved and glad that nothing happened to you and that you were able to continue playing,” wrote Kohr on Instagram. Mainz will now have to do without him in the relegation battle.
