Because of the betting scandal in Turkish football, fourth division club Agri Spor is running out of players. The club is currently training with only seven players because 17 are suspended because of the betting scandal, said the club’s vice president, Tekin Yusan, according to the state news agency Anadolu. “At the moment the management and coaching cadre is bigger than the players,” he said.
It was “a difficult time” for the club, said Yusan. They now want to fill the squad with youth players from the U19 team. The betting scandal has been shaking Turkish football for weeks. At the end of October, the TFF association made allegations known that a total of 152 referees were said to have actively placed bets. Clubs and players are also being investigated: 149 referees and more than 1,000 players have so far been suspended for the duration of the investigation. 27 players from the Turkish top league Süper Lig are affected, including professionals from the top clubs Galatasaray and Besiktas.
