The argument escalated into a physical argument, during which Gueye slapped his teammate in the face. Without hesitation, referee Toby Harrington showed the red card for unsportsmanlike conduct – as required by FIFA’s rules.
Afterwards, the 36-year-old continued to fume, Everton keeper Jordan Pickford had great difficulty calming Gueye and sending him towards the players’ tunnel.
A similar incident occurred during a World Cup qualifying match between the German national team and Wales. In March 2009, Lukas Podolski slapped his captain Michael Ballack. Despite being in a relatively secure lead, Ballack had given Podolski loud instructions that he apparently did not want to accept. However, the incident had no consequences for Podolski.
Everton FC takes the lead despite being outnumbered
Everton FC, on the other hand, had to make do with one man less for almost 80 minutes in Manchester. However, that didn’t seem to have much of an impact on the team. After almost half an hour the “Toffees” the lead. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall flicked the ball beautifully into the right corner (29th). That should be enough until the end of the 90 minutes.
For Everton it was after the 2-0 win against FC Fulham the second win in a row. Manchester has been waiting for a three-pointer for three games now. Both clubs are in the middle of the table with 18 points.
