They are broad strokes the same locations who the cabinet had already chosen in May. According to State Secretary of Defense Gijs Tuinman, expansion is necessary due to the increasing threat in the world, especially in eastern Europe.

Defense wants to expand considerably, especially in the north of North Holland. For example, unmanned helicopters (drones heavier than 150 kilograms, ed.) are stationed at De Kooy air base for mine countermeasures and sea reconnaissance. The training area at sea near Den Helder will also be expanded, so that it is easier to practice with unmanned vessels.

A new amphibious training area is to be built near the coast of Groote Keeten. Defense wants to train here for landing operations from sea to land.

Furthermore, the area where helicopters are allowed to fly low in North Holland will be significantly expanded. Currently, low flying is only in the Wieringermeerpolder in the Noordkop, but in the future that area will be expanded from Purmerend to Oudesluis.

Two locations were further investigated

Further research is required for two locations, the shooting ranges at Petten and Breezanddijk, where Defense wants to test (new) ammunition and weapon systems in the future. Among other things, it still needs to be investigated what effect the noise has on the environment. This is evident from information from Defense, which NOS got his hands on.

Now that Defense has been decided, the cabinet will make a decision on these locations in December. The plan is then submitted to the House of Representatives. If parliament agrees, Defense can start implementation. The locations must be completed by 2040.
