Teaching Day 2025 started with a look outside the box, highlighted old and new teaching approaches in various event formats and ended with prizes for very specific, good teaching on site. The event by the Lübeck University of Technology and the University of Lübeck addressed major topics such as internationalization and innovation, but also provided practical tips for more enthusiasm and solid basic work in teaching.

A university without internationalization is no longer conceivable in our timeemphasized Dr. Muriel Helbig, President of the TH Lübeck at the welcome. The TH Lübeck is networked worldwide and has been working well with many partner universities for years. Encounters don’t happen on their own. They need to be organized. Our teaching formats are not only formats for imparting knowledge, but also for cultural exchange. Good teaching is our foundation.

Prof. Monique Janneck receives teaching award from TH Lübeck

This year, Prof. Dr. Monique Janneck from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was awarded the TH Lübeck teaching award for the course “Usability/User Experience Design”, a compulsory module in the Information Technology and Design degree program. It conveys basic knowledge of human-computer interaction and is offered bilingually (German/English). The internships also take place either in German or English. By being embedded in the International Track, exchange with students from different countries is part of the format.

The heart of good teaching is people like you, dear Monique Janneck, who impart it. Respectful, open, with expertise and love for people, practical and application-orientedsaid Helbig. In addition, they are also great at research in our ISy and CoSA competence centers, well connected in transfer and, as Vice Dean for Research and Internationalization, highly involved in the self-administration of our university. Dear Ms. Janneck – you are a jack of all trades.

Good teaching is remembered

This year, not one person, but four people received the student teaching award from the Lübeck University of Technology. Good teaching has many faces – but it always has one thing in common: it stays in the memorysaid Lukas Behrens, unofficial head of the student jury. Students were able to nominate teachers and then – among other things, in the categories Dealing with students, Teacher events or Exam design evaluate. The students’ free texts describe what particularly distinguishes the four teachers:

  • Prof. Dr. Sabine Framke, professor of general business administration, specializing in health economics, is described by the students as a “power woman with heart and mind” who, in addition to excursions, also supports challenges in finding a career.
  • Pof. Dr. Nadine Buczek, Professor of Basic Physics, Renewable Energy and Photonics in the Department of Applied Natural Sciences, showed the students the connection between the basics of mathematics and natural science in practical experiments. In doing so, she made abstract content tangible. “A role model professor,” said the students.
  • Prof. Christian Blatt, Professor of Building simulation and optimization was able to win the prize for the second time. The students particularly appreciate his way of taking time for the students and, as head of the Sustainable Building Technology course, solving problems with them on an equal footing. He transforms his practical experience in building materials theory into fascination and enthusiasm in his lectures, which is why the students gave Mr. Blatt the title “The Best – without discussion”.
  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Schäfer, Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is particularly committed to trying to ensure that everyone comes along, especially in basic courses. As a result, students lose their fear of math. There were also compliments on his thoroughness and speed when correcting his exams: “He corrects faster than a computer – he is a Turing machine.”

Awards from the University of Lübeck

The University Teaching Award the University of Lübeck (UzL) was awarded this year to Dr. med. Nikolas Tauber, Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics, for his course Hands-on skills: Basics of invasive and surgical skills in gynecology and obstetrics awarded. The UzL special prize went to the student group Katharina Maczewski, Alina Miersch, Katharina Schulz, Paula Wiens and Friederike Stiller for organizing and implementing the elective Planetary Health – healthy earth, healthy people excellent.

The University of Lübeck honored the outstanding teaching achievements of young academics with the Walter Dosch Young Academics Prizes.

  • Computer Science/Technology Section: Dr. Gesina Schwalbe, Institute for Software Technology and Programming Languages, for the English-language online lecture Foundations of Machine Learning and Data Science in the master’s program in Artificial Intelligence.
  • Natural Sciences Section: Dr. Young-Hwa Song, Institute of Physics, for the event Introduction to biophysics.
  • Medicine Section: Dr. Jakob Meinel, Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, for the course Immune to defeat – Interdisciplinary clinical thinking and action as preparation for the Paul Ehrlich Contest (PEC).

Workshops for the further development of university teaching

The day offered a wide selection of workshops, short lectures and dialogue-oriented formats. The topics ranged from healthy teaching and learning to diversity-sensitive university didactics to questions of power and responsibility in teaching and non-discriminatory learning environments. Technical and digital developments also played a major role: VR in teaching, AI-supported translation and summary of teaching content, new Moodle tools and experiences from the pilot phase of electronic exams provided insights into the further development of digital university teaching. The award ceremony was musically accompanied by harmonica player Konstantin Reinfeld.
