Enthusiastic Martens pounces on the new Speaker of the House

Thom van Campen is the new chairman of the House of Representatives. The VVD member trumps incumbent chairman Martin Bosma (PVV) and GL/PvdA member Tom van der Lee. Immediately after the election, Van Campen was congratulated by dozens of MPs. Member of Parliament Claire Martens (VVD) congratulated the new chairman and fellow party member with a big hug. Three rounds of voting were needed to elect a new chairman. Remarkably, Van Campen received the fewest votes in the first round. But in the second round many people switched from Van der Lee to the VVD member. This was considered more likely in a direct ‘duel’ with Bosma. In The Hague it is suspected that the D66 faction initially divided the votes between Van Campen and Van der Lee, but then went for the VVD member. Van Campen ultimately received 79 votes, Bosma 69.
